General Frequently Asked Questions can be found here

Here we answer some of the more complex technical question regarding the elements involved in a water feature.

1. How to decide which pump I need.

  • When specifying equipment for our customers certain information is required to make sure the product we recommend will satisfy their requirements fully. Below are the questions that we ask to ensure that any calculations done arrive at the correct recommendation.

  • From the effect required we can calculate the flow rate required. For the average watercourse- the most common type of stream, with water gently cascading down a shallow gradient between the rock the flow required is 1000 litres per hour per 10cm width.
  • If a water wall is chosen, that is a sheet of water falling down the surface of glass, a smooth sheet of stone or stainless steel for example. The water remain in constant contact with the surface of the wall then a the flow required is 3000 litres per minute per metre width.
  • If a clear sheet is chosen, that is a steady sheet of water cascading away from the surface, then choose from the table below. Note that water will naturally form a “ V “ shape in a cascade. The table below shows the flow required for different waterfall widths at different heights, whilst avoiding the formation of a “ V “ shape.
  • Friction loss in the water flowing through a pipe results in a head loss. To counteract this loss we recommend the largest diameter hose available for the pump in question and the minimum number of bends.

  • As a guide for a pond with no fish the water should be turned over twice per day, for standard fish (not koi) the water should be turned over 4 times per day, whilst for Koi pond the water should be turned over 24 times per day.

  • Below is a typical sketch of a commercial water feature installation.
  • This installation includes overflow and automatic level control. A wind measurement device may also be introduced to automatically adjust the height of the fountain during windy conditions to avoid overspray.
