Pump Curves

PUMP PERFORMANCE CURVES

Pump performance curves are the best way of ensuring you get the correct flow rate from your pump. The x axis (horizontal) shows the flow rate in litres per minute (Lpm) and the Y axis (vertical) shows the head height (height at which the water must flow above the water surface).

An example of using the curve is to find the flow rate you can achieve at a certain height above the pond (ideal for working out what the effect of a waterfall will look like when built). You can see if the pump you choose is to small or too big. Proper use of these curves will reduce energy requirements. There is no point oversizing a pump when a smaller pump will do.

Naturally flow rate are affected by bends in pipe, length and pipe diameter so always aim to keep bends to a minimum, avoid right angle bends if possible, keep pipe length to minimum and use the largest possible diameter pipe available for the pump hosetail. This way you will achieve optimum flow rates.

We also have a selection of very powerful pumps available for larger water features some of which are capable of gushing water 80 meters in the air.
